This week marked an exciting milestone at St Bega’s Catholic Primary School in Hartlepool, as pupils took their first steps into the world of news reporting through the Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust Media Correspondent programme. The Trust’s Media and Marketing team visited school to officially launch the initiative and introduce our new student reporters to the role.

Introducing Our School’s Media Team

Selected pupils were proudly presented with their Media Correspondent badges, recognising their responsibility as storytellers for our school community. These pupils will play a key part in capturing school life, reporting on events and helping to share the achievements and activities taking place across St Bega’s.

During the visit, pupils spent time working with the Media and Marketing team, discovering how stories are planned, filmed, created and published across the Trust. The session offered an inside look at the skills involved in producing high-quality media content, from interviewing and presenting to operating equipment and structuring reports.

Taking Part in a Trust-Wide Filming Project

A highlight of the afternoon was the chance to contribute to a special filming project for a Bishop Hogarth Fratelli Tutti video. Pupils supported the team behind the camera and in front of it, gaining first-hand experience of the collaborative process involved in creating professional media.

Their confidence and enthusiasm were clear to see, and they made an excellent start in their new roles.

A Valuable Learning Experience

Becoming Media Correspondents gives pupils the opportunity to develop skills that support learning across the curriculum. These include:

  • Clear communication
  • Confidence in speaking and presenting
  • Writing for a purpose
  • Digital and media literacy
  • Working collaboratively
  • Creative thinking

These experiences help pupils understand how media shapes the way we share information and celebrate community life.

Looking Ahead

We are excited to see how our new St Bega’s Media Correspondents grow into their roles over the coming months. They will be helping to share the moments, milestones and successes that make our school such a special place.

The new team is now officially up and running, ready to shine a light on life at St Bega’s. Watch out for their first reports soon.
