It has been an exciting and inspiring week in the Art classrooms at St. Bega’s, with pupils across the school diving into new skills, creative techniques and cultural exploration.
Our Year 1 children have been busy experimenting with a range of different media as they began designing and creating their very own 3D Brazilian carnival masks. Using early collage and sculpture techniques, the children explored colour, pattern and texture to bring their first ideas to life. Over the next few weeks, they will be studying the work of Brazilian artists and using these influences to inspire their final carnival mask creations. It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they learn about Brazilian culture through art.

Meanwhile, our talented Year 4/5 pupils have been developing their portrait drawing skills. This week, they focused on studying and sketching the key features of the face, paying close attention to proportion, detail and expression. At the end of the lesson, the children reflected thoughtfully on their progress and shared constructive feedback with one another. Hearing them discuss techniques, celebrate each other’s strengths and recognise their own improvements was a real highlight.

Both classes have shown fantastic creativity, focus and artistic curiosity. A huge well done to Year 1 and Year 4/5 for their brilliant work — we can’t wait to see how their projects continue to grow over the coming weeks.
