The Curriculum at St Bega's Catholic Primary School
St Bega’s is a vibrant, happy school that provides a nurturing learning environment that promotes equity and inspires academic excellence and achievement for all our pupils. Children have a positive attitude and enjoy learning. We want children to be actively engaged in their learning, using oracy skills, critical thinking and asking questions to be curious about our world. We celebrate the successes of our children and offer support and encouragement to allow them all to develop into responsible and resilient citizens.
As a Catholic school, our mission statement, ‘Love one another as I have loved you’ embodies Jesus’ message that we are all unique in the eyes of God. Children at St Bega’s are inspired by Christ and actively show love for each other and our world.
Our curriculum is relevant, cumulative and ambitious. We guide children to understand their place in the world whilst celebrating our historic heritage. We provide opportunities for children to discover knowledge, deepen understanding, revisit prior learning and draw on new experiences that they will have at St Bega’s. We can enhance children’s education with wider curriculum opportunities that will expand their social experiences and allow the children to become active members of their local, national and global community.
We understand our world
We help children explore and appreciate the diverse and interconnected world around them. Children can relate their learning to our rich local history and heritage, understanding how our community has evolved and contributed to the wider world. We foster a deeper connection to our surroundings and a sense of pride in our local and global communities. We develop essential skills and knowledge across the curriculum; children gain insights into significant events, places, and people that have shaped the world. Critical thinking is encouraged to help them analyse information, ask questions, and make informed decisions alongside promoting British Values. This helps our children become responsible and empathetic citizens of the world.
We can achieve anything
Aspiring to achieve is a journey that encompasses a blend of foundational knowledge, personal development, and community engagement. Our ambitious curriculum and high expectations lay the groundwork, that allows our children to reach for the stars. Career aspirations begin to take shape through community influences, where we recognise and cultivate individual interests and strengths. Celebrations of achievements, both big and small, reinforce the importance of good behaviour, attendance and resilience. Our Trust Virtues are integral to personal development, guiding children's actions and decisions. We want our children to know that they can achieve anything!
We have the world at our feet
Broadening the horizons of our children involves nurturing and guiding them on their own journey, encouraging them to seize opportunities and take risks. By offering various clubs and enrichment activities, children can experience something new helping them to develop curiosity, grow in confidence and learn and develop new skills. Engaging with our parish and rich community helps them understand the importance of giving back and being active members of society. Our unique coastal location provides experiences which can further enrich their education, providing opportunities to explore and appreciate the natural world. Through these diverse experiences, our children can grow into well-rounded individuals who have a love for learning and embrace every opportunity. They have the Headland in their hearts with the world at their feet.
We love one another
At St Bega’s, we embrace the belief that we are all children of God, which is reflected in every aspect of our school life. Guided by Catholic Social Teaching, we engage in charitable work that fosters a sense of belonging and purpose, encouraging us to live out our Trust Virtues. Our connections with the parish and wider community strengthen our hearts and support our faith journey. We celebrate culture and diversity, recognising the unique gifts each person brings. Through prayer and liturgy, we deepen our spiritual development, while our rules, behaviour, and high expectations create a respectful and nurturing environment for all. Our Religious Education and Personal, Social, Health, and Economic curriculum further enhances our spiritual and moral development, helping us to grow into well-rounded individuals who live out the commandment, ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’ John 13:34
