Intent (Why do we teach what we teach?)

At St Bega’s Catholic Primary School, we aim to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music. We aim to encourage the children to enjoy music as much as possible, through singing, playing instruments, listening to music and making their own music. We intend for our pupils to become confident and creative musicians who can express themselves through music whilst appreciating and appraising different styles of music.

Implementation (How do we teach it?)

Experiences with music start in Early Years, where children explore how they can use their voice for singing, chanting and rhymes. They will learn how to listen carefully to music, identifying rhythm, tempo and pitch. Opportunities with tuned and untuned instruments allows the children time to explore how sounds are made. Time will be spent listening to and appraising a wide range of high-quality music.

As children move through the school, they will begin to explore skills for playing musical instruments with some accuracy and confidence. They will begin composing their own music, using instruments and their voice, as they begin to understand notation. Children will be encouraged to work together as well as independently on pieces of work as well.
